The Association “International Understanding and Tolerance e.V.” wants to set a sign against the forgotten victims of hatred and violence, by partnering with the Holocaust project "Night" (Florida, USA). The project aims to perform the event “The 'Night' Concert” worldwide. The political scientist, Dr. Jerry Glantz, is the initiator and director of the project.
The members of the association are based in Hanover and cooperate with many committed people and supporters. They want to make a contribution with this project, by remembering the victims, but furthermore want to counteract the increasing hatred, indifference, violence and genocide in the world.
The purpose of the association is to support the development of an international attitude towards tolerance, in all areas of culture and international understanding, and to support the remembrance of victims of persecution and violence.
The purpose of the statute is achieved particularly, by holding events to raise awareness within society, regarding the concept of international understanding and tolerance of different cultures and against hatred and exclusion. The association is a non-profit organization.
In the narrative part of the event, "The 'Night' Concert“ shows that initial hatred ultimately leads to genocide. The musical part reflects Jewish prayers, as „the only answer to the Shoah,” says Joseph Ness. He adds, that the connection of something beautiful, such as synagogue music and the terrible experiences of a Holocaust survivor, initially appears problematic from an ethical point of view.
In addition to the destruction by the Shoah, caused by hate, the resurrection of this wonderful, forgotten music should also be shown. Transferred to our time, it means not only to oppose the destructive, but to counteract with good.
"The 'Night' Holocaust Project" wants to keep the memories of the 1986 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Elie Wiesel (1928-2016) of the Shoah, alive and bring the poignant music of Leib Glantz (1898-1964), one of the most important cantors and composers of Jewish music, to a larger audience.
The project is a statement against increasing hatred and genocide worldwide.
"The 'Night' Concert“ combines the liturgical synagogal music, by Leib Glantz, in the orchestral version, composed by Maestro Joseph Ness, with excerpts from the book, “Night. Memory and Testimony“, by Elie Wiesel. In his texts, the American-Romanian Holocaust survivor, writer, university professor and publicist, describes the deeply moving and haunting memory of his time as a 15-year-old in the Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camp.
"The 'Night' Concert" is performed by renowned orchestras, choirs, soloists and actors in the respective country. Performances are held in concert halls, theaters and churches around the world. The libretto is presented in Hebrew. The audience is given a moving, holistic experience. During the performance of the music and exerts, texts and images are projected onto a large screen, which are synchronized with the musical and narrative performance. The texts appear in several languages.
